According to BILD, Weigl has been having some problems with his adductors since the end of last season and his symptoms have not completely healed in the summer break. As a result he will train alone for the time being. Weigl’s issues mean that he is unlikely to be part of Borussia Dortmund’s pre season tour to the United States and could also miss the start of the new season.
Weigl’s issues are a worrying sign for Borussia Dortmund who are now down to just two senior central midfielders in the squad. New signing Thomas Delaney and Shinji Kagawa will need prolonged summer breaks after their World Cup exploits with their respective countries. Nuri Sahin is also being linked with a return to his homeland, which could further deplete Borussia Dortmund’s resources.
Weigl himself is a target for a number of top teams in Europe, including PSG and Manchester City. But his injury could scupper any potential transfer. There is currently no time frame for his return. Weigl also missed last summer’s pre season tour because of a broken ankle, from which he returned in September. As a result, Weigl failed to hold down his starting spot in the team and had a below par season.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told BILD, “Julian already had some problems with the adductors in the last games before the end of the season. The complaints have not died down on vacation. He will now train individually.”
It remains to be seen when Weigl will be fit again, but from Zorc’s words it looks like the 22 year old could well miss the first few weeks of the season.
Borussia Dortmund players will return to training on Saturday. Lucien Favre’s men will then travel to the United States for their pre season tour on July 18, where they will take on Manchester City, Liverpool and Benfica in the International Champions Cup. Dortmund begin their Bundesliga campaign on August 25 against rivals RB Leipzig.
